Step into Borobudur

Borobudur Temple is a world cultural heritage site, the largest Buddhist temple in the world located in Borobudur, Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. The location of the temple is approximately 99 kilometers southwest of Semarang, 86 kilometers west of Surakarta, and 40 kilometers northwest of Yogyakarta City.

One of the relief stories in Borobudur on the temple wall tells the story of a young man named Sudhana. This is a story relief written in the Gandhawyuha text, which is a story about Sudhana's wanderings in seeking the highest wisdom and knowledge as a saint.

Gandhawyuha

Gandawyuha is a depiction of the story told in the last chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra, which is a book that contains the story or story of the adventures of a young man named Sudhana, who was full of enthusiasm and tireless in his search to obtain the Highest Perfect Wisdom.

The story of a young man Sudhana includes two galleries, the third and fourth galleries and half of the second gallery, which consists of a total of 460 relief panels. A row of reliefs adorning the walls of the 2nd aisle, is the story or story of Sudhana who traveled tirelessly in his efforts to seek the Ultimate Knowledge of Truth by a young man named Sudhana.

The depiction in 460 frames is based on the Mahayana Buddhist holy book entitled Gandawyuha, and the closing part of the story is based on another book, namely Bhadracari. The main character in this story is Sudhana, a young son of a very rich merchant, depicted in the 16th row of relief panels. The story of the previous 15 relief panels forms a prologue, namely a story about a miracle during Buddha's samadhi in Jeta Park in Sravasti.

During his search, Sudhana is said to have visited no less than thirty teachers, but none of them could fully satisfy him. During his journey, Sudhana was then instructed by Manjusri to meet a monk named Megasri, where he was given the first doctrine.

As his journey continued, Sudhana met several teachers including Supratisthita, the Doctor Megha or Spirit of Knowledge, a Muktaka Banker, a Saradhvaja Monk, Upasika Asa or Teacher of the Highest Spirit of Enlightenment, Bhismottaranirghosa, Brahmin Jayosmayatna, Princess Maitrayani, Monk Sudarsana, a boy -men named Indriyesvara, Upasika Prabhuta, Banker Ratnachuda, King Anala, Dewa Siva Mahadeva, Queen Maya, Bodhisattva Maitreya and in the end then returned to Manjusri.

In each meeting with the teachers, Sudhana has imparted certain doctrines, knowledge and wisdom. The story about the meeting with the teacher is shown in the third gallery. In the story the previous fifteen relief panels form the miracle produced by the Buddha's Samadhi (deepest meditation) at a meeting with one hundred disciples in Jeta's Garden at Sravasti. It is said that upon arrival at the holy place, namely Vichitrasaladhvaya, the people in the city flocked out to hear an announcement from the Bodhisattva which described the extraordinary deeds that the Buddha had done.

In the end, after a brief meeting with Manjusri, Sudhana continued to the residence of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, this story is depicted in the fourth gallery of Chandi Borobudur.
