One of the efforts to ensure the continuity of Borobudur is the maintenance and restoration of this building. This is an important thing in efforts to preserve Borobudur, as an appreciation of Indonesia's cultural heritage.
Rehabilitation
Borobudur has experienced several series of conservation efforts carried out by the Indonesian Government and also internationally. After the major restoration of Borobudur in 1973, conservation of this monument according to UNESCO identified three important problems in efforts to preserve Borobudur, namely (i) vandalism or damage by visitors; (ii) soil erosion in the southeastern part of the site; (iii) analysis and return of lost parts.
Several things such as loose soil, several earthquakes and heavy rain can shake the structure of this building. Earthquakes are the most serious factor, because not only can rocks fall and arches collapse, the ground itself moves in waves that can damage building structures.
The increasing popularity and tradition of the stupa has attracted many visitors, most of whom are Indonesian citizens. Even though there are many warning signs not to touch anything, warnings are sounded via loudspeakers and there are guards, vandalism in the form of destroying and defacing reliefs and statues often occurs, this will clearly damage this site.On May 27 2006, an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the scale rocked the southern coast of Central Java. This natural disaster destroyed most of the areas with the most victims in Yogyakarta, but had little effect on Borobudur Temple.
On 28 August 2006 a symposium entitled Trail of Civilizations was held in Borobudur at the initiative of the Governor of Central Java and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, also attending representatives from UNESCO and Buddhist-majority countries in Southeast Asia, such as Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Borobudur was badly affected by the eruption of Mount Merapi in October and November 2010. Volcanic ash from Merapi covered the building complex, which is 28 kilometers (17 mi) southwest of the Merapi crater. A layer of volcanic ash reaching a thickness of around 25 centimeters (10 in) covered this building during the eruption of 3–5 November 2010, the volcanic ash also killed the surrounding plants.
Experts are concerned that volcanic ash, which is chemically acidic, could damage the rocks of this historic building. The temple complex was closed from 5 to 9 November 2010 to clean up dust. Observing the rehabilitation efforts of Borobudur after the 2010 Merapi eruption, UNESCO has donated 3 million US dollars to fund rehabilitation efforts.
Cleaning the temple from volcanic ash deposits will take at least 6 months, followed by re-greening and planting trees in the surrounding environment to stabilize the temperature, and finally reviving the social and economic life of the local community.
More than 55,000 stone temple blocks had to be dismantled to repair water and drainage systems which were blocked by a mixture of volcanic ash mixed with rainwater. The restoration ended in November 2011, earlier than originally expected.
